Ray: We didn’t deserve to lose

The U’s went down 2-1 at home to Hendon in the Ryman Football League Premier Division despite being the better side for large chunks of the game and hitting the post twice in quick succession during the second half.

United player-manager Ray said: “We didn’t deserve to lose it. We had plenty of chances and apart from the two goals, I can’t recally our ‘keeper having any saves to make. They put the ball in the box twice and scored two goals from it.

“They were disappointing goals to give away and we’ve got to be ruthless when we get our chances. We should’ve got some points on the board, but we can’t sit there feelinhg sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to stay positive and keep going. We’ve got three more games in the next seven days.”

It was another industrious performance from United, who led by a Sam Adams goal to nil at half time, despite the heavy conditions on a wet afternoon and the hectic recent fixture list.

“These players gave it everything they’ve got,” continued Ray, who went off injured in the first half-hour. “That’s their fourth game in seven days and I couldn’t ask for any more. They gave me everything.

“I tweaked my ankle ligaments a little bit on Thursday (in the 2-0 win over Harrow Borough), and I was struggling with turning and running. It’s disappointing because I want to play every game. There’s a couple of other boys carrying knocks, but they’re running that extra yard for us and they’re pushing themselves to the limit.”

United are hoping that Dee Okojie and Zac Attwood might be back for the away fixture against Hendon on Tuesday night, and possibly even long-term injury victim Bradley Goldberg as they seek to clamber out of the two relegation places.
