Poyet will start season with Seagulls after summer of speculation

Gus Poyet is now certain to start the season at Brighton – despite some Seagulls fans nervously watching proceedings at White Hart Lane.

The Brighton boss has been linked to a string of managerial moves throughout the close season, having at one time or another been mentioned as a potential new head coach at Wolves, Aston Villa, West Brom, Norwich and Swansea.

With the Welsh outfit due to confirm former Danish superstar Michael Laudrup as the man to take over from Brendan Rodgers, the managerial merry-go-round seems to be grinding to a half – with Poyet still at the helm at The Amex.

The Uruguayan has repeatedly said he will not leave Sussex unless the offer is too good to turn down but that has not stopped bookmakers from adding his name to the summer of speculation.

Harry Redknapp’s departure from the Tottenham Hotspur hotseat has led to worried chatter among some sections of the Amex faithful who are worried Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may turn to former player and crowd favourite Poyet.

However, Poyet is not being considered because of his lack of top flight experience. David Moyes is the hot favourite, with Jurgen Klinsmann, Roberto Martinez, Laurent Blanc and Fabio Capello among a host of names above him being given shorter odds.

Poyet is at a best price of 14-1 for the Spurs job but it would take nothing short of a miracle for him to start the season at White Hart Lane.

A more pressing concern for Poyet is the need to recruit new players for the coming season. He is in the hunt for competition in both full back positions, a dominating midfield player, a new goalkeeper and more strength in the attacking positions.

He revealed earlier this week that the club had ditched plans to bid for Czech Republic right back Theodor Gebre Selassie after being quoted £2million by his current club.

He also missed out on former loanee Joe Mattock who chose Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the Albion following his release from West Brom.
