Moore hits first senior hat-trick as Broadbridge Heath beat Selsey

This match was in doubt until midday, originally due to a snow covered pitch and a frozen running track and then, when the snow and ice had melted, a waterlogged pitch but it passed a late inspection and the game was on.

It didn’t take long for Heath to open the scoring with their first attack of the game on 3 minutes; Merv Bhujun broke away down the right, crossed to the far post and Ollie Moore rose above everyone to head home. Bhujun almost made it 2-0 minutes later when he volleyed a Mark Bevan cross just wide of the upright and Tiago Andrade came close with a direct free–kick from 20 yards. Selsey had a great chance to draw level on 10 minutes when James Parsons cross from the left was headed just over the bar by Mark Thompson but on 18 minutes it was 2-0, Piers McDermott rifled in a shot from the edge of the penalty area, the goal bound effort was blocked by Tiago Andrade who turned and hammered the loose ball into the roof of the net. Heath extended their lead before the break when Jake Legrange picked out Ollie Moore who side-stepped a challenge and then smashed a right foot shot past the Selsey keeper to make it 3-0.

Heath added a fourth midway through the second half, Andrade was fouled just outside the area, Moore’s free-kick was blocked by the wall but the ball fell kindly to Bevan who smashed a left foot shot through a crowded area into the net.

Moore completed his first ever senior hat-trick with Heath’s fifth goal 20 minutes before the end, having jinked his way into the penalty area the Heath midfield player was clumsily brought down but got up to score from the resulting penalty to bring his season’s tally to 17 goals.

Heath Manager Steve Painter said he told his players after the game that their target for the season has now been revised, the original aim at the start of the season was to maintain Division One status, but with 14 games still to play that has now been changed to a top 10 finish.

He said “Considering that just three years ago we were playing Intermediate football in Division 3 that is an amazing rise.”
