Luckless Woodley out for season

Rye United expect to be without Luke Woodley for the remainder of the season.

The jet-heeled wide player, pictured, is to undergo an operation on a nasty facial injury sustained against Worthing United last weekend.

Rye manager Scott Price said: “He’s definitely out for the season. I don’t think there’s a fracture there, but the eye socket and cheekbone are squashed, and they need to push it out a bit. I feel for him.”

Woodley collided with goalkeeper Josh Pelling while making an important interception midway through the first half of a match in which Rye came from behind to win 3-1.

“It’s a massive blow,” Price continued. “He’s arguably been one of the three best players of the season along with Rhodesy (Phil Rhodes) and Sam Adams. I would say 90 per cent of his goals have come from full-back.”

Having been very much a fringe player last season, the 21-year-old has established himself as a regular in the starting line-up this term, scoring six goals including a memorable one at home to Lingfield in September.
