Darren Hare believes his Hastings United footballers sent out a ‘huge message’ to their play-off rivals with last night’s (Tuesday’s) 5-0 win at home to Carshalton Athletic.
United struck twice in the first half and three further times during the second period to blow away the third highest scorers in Ryman Football League Division One South.
“There’s still 12 games to go and a lot of points up for grabs, but I think we’ve sent out a huge message to the rest of the teams up there that we’re on their tails and we’re gunning for them,” said United manager Hare.
Frannie Collin, Harry Stannard, Jack Evans, Jerrome Sobers and Kiernan Hughes-Mason were on target in what Hare described as one of the highlights of his time in management.
“We’ve had Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday for the last six or seven weeks and it’s been non-stop,” he continued. “I take my hat off to the players and that’s probably one of the proudest moments of my very short managerial career.
“I thought the players were magnificent from start to finish. We showed a work ethic, a resilience and a clinicality about us again. Every single one of those players deserves credit today - they were fantastic.
“Carshalton are a very good passing football team; they’re one of the best in the league. At their place (in a 4-4 draw) they carved us open at times, but today we picked the right shape and I thought we had the right players in the right positions.”
Hare was also proud of the way his team performed given the lack of recovery time from Sunday’s game away to Guernsey, and was delighted with young players Johnny Akoto, Bradley Stevenson, Harry Stannard and Sam Cruttwell.
“Some of the youngsters have been outstanding,” said Hare. “We’ve got some young kids out there, but with the experience we’ve got, it gives us a bit of legs and it’s nice to have a bit of freshness about us as well. I can’t fault the application and effort; we’ve got a great dressing room in there now.”
