Bexhill AAC has withdrawn its newly-promoted first team from the Macron East Sussex Football League before the season has started.
AAC capped an excellent 2014/15 campaign by winning promotion from Division One, but have joined Iden in pulling out of the Premier Division before a ball has been kicked in 2015/16.
A club spokesman said: “Having secured promotion, it is regrettable that the club has found itself in a position to withdraw its 1st XI from the East Sussex Football League.
“Such a decision was not taken lightly, but given today’s “social media”, the club’s viewpoint on the matter will already have been compromised, so the club will not be making any further statement.”
Founded in 1946, the club is steeped in the sporting history of Bexhill. The last time promotion was secured to the Premier Division was following four successive promotion seasons at the end of the 1999/2000 campaign.
The club finished runners-up in the top flight in 2000/01 and 2001/02 before amalgamating with Bexhill Town to form Bexhill United in the Sussex County League for the start of the 2002/03 season.
The association with Bexhill United ran for three seasons before separating back to Bexhill Amateur Athletic Club at the sports centre for the start of 2005/06, with teams in Division Two and Five.
The first team secured promotion to Division One in that first season and maintained its position until achieving promotion again last term. The club expresses its thanks to all the players and managers alike for the successes achieved over the past 20 years.
Bexhill AAC’s old second team will now become the first team in Division Two and a newly-introduced third team will become the seconds in Division Four.
