Hastings United’s footballers came from behind to record their first league draw of the season tonight (Tuesday).
A second half penalty from Sam Cole clinched a 1-1 draw away to 10-man Chipstead in Ryman Football League Division One South on a night when United had goalkeeper Josh Pelling stretchered off.
On a wet night in Surrey, second-bottom Chipstead opened the scoring midway through the first half. Cole’s clearing header only went as far as Sam Butler, who fired home from the edge of the box.
Pelling pulled off a couple of fine saves to prevent United falling further behind during a below par opening period in which their best moment was an off target Zac Attwood free kick.
United equalised in the 72nd minute. Attwood was brought down at a corner by Newton - who was shown a second yellow card - and leading scorer Cole tucked away the resulting penalty for his 11th goal of the season.
Pelling pulled off a fingertip save before gathering at the feet of an opposing forward and being caught in the process. He tried to get to his feet and soldier on, but was soon back down again and had to be carried off.
Versatile midfielder Sam Adams took over the gloves and safely dealt with a long range effort. At the other end, United substitute Bright Temba had a header saved during more than 10 minutes of added time.
United: Pelling (Cumming-Bart), Crabb, Cole, Rowe, Ray, Harris (Richardson-Brown), Medlock (Temba), Adams, Attwood, Johnson, Cruttwell. Subs not used: Wilson, Hollobone. Attendance: 56.
