Leaders target six of the best

Scott Price believes Rye United may have to win all of their remaining six league games to clinch the title.

The Quarterboys sit 11 points clear of a Three Bridges side which has five games in hand as they pursue top spot in Sussex County Football League Division One for the first time ever.

Rye manager Price said: “We can’t afford to slip up. I think we need six wins and if we win every game, I’m quite confident we’ll win the league. But if we slip up, they’ve got to slip up twice.”

Both teams are in hugely impressive form. Leaders Rye have won seven of their eight league games since the turn of the year, while third-placed Bridges have won 15 and drawn three of their last 18 Division One matches.

Second-placed Lancing, who trail Rye by six points with a game in hand, also can’t be discounted having won their last eight encounters, although Rye and Bridges appear better placed.

Rye were originally scheduled to be fixtureless this weekend, but the trip to Selsey has been brought forward from April 21 because the teams will meet in the Sussex RUR Charity Cup final on April 24.

Although Rye scored eight of their 123 goals in all competitions so far this season in September’s reverse fixture, they surely won’t have it so easy this time around against a Selsey side now up to 13th.

Price could face problems in defence because he may be without Ben Radley (work) and Jono Richardson (university graduation), as well as facial injury victim Luke Woodley, although Phil Rhodes should be back following illness.
