Late own goal hands Rye win

Rye United picked up three more Sussex County Football League points thanks to a helping hand from their opponents.

The Quarterboys won 3-2 away to Lancing on Saturday via a late own goal. Wes Tate and Scott Ramsay had put Rye two-up after 15 minutes only for previously unbeaten Lancing to fight their way back into it.

Rye remain three points clear at the top of Division One because second-placed Pagham preserved their 100 per cent record via a 3-0 victory away to Sidley United.

The stand-out result of the weekend came from Westfield, who triumphed 6-2 away to fellow Division Two side Storrington in round two of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup. Joe Barham (2), David Pugh, Gordon Cuddington, Roberto Martelini and Sam Willett scored the goals.

Bexhill United will feel they deserved better than a 0-0 draw at home to Wick in Division Two having had much the better of the game and missed several decent opportunities.

Ben Eldridge scored the consolation as Little Common slumped 5-1 at home to Seaford Town in round one of the Division Two Challenge Cup. Full reports on each of these matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
