Honours even at The Pilot Field

Hastings United missed out on a third straight win, but did at least keep a third straight clean sheet this afternoon (Saturday) with a 0-0 draw at home to Hampton & Richmond Borough.

It was United’s ninth draw in their last 10 Ryman Football League Premier Division home matches and it keeps them third-from-bottom of the table, one place above the relegation positions.

United were second best for much of the first half and needed a trio of good saves from Daniel East to remain on level terms. The on loan goalkeeper firstly stood up well to keep out James Simmonds’s angled effort, then made a decent stop low to his right from Charlie Moone’s volley and lastly tipped Joe Turner’s effort around the post.

Hampton squandered two very presentable opportunities either side of the hour mark as they got on top again. Moone blazed over from a central position 10 yards out and Ryan Moss then stabbed wide of an empty net under pressure from Ben Judge having rounded East.

United had barely threatened the away goal until a dramatic passage of play in the 80th minute. Bailo Camara had an angled effort saved and then appeared to be brought down as he went after the rebound, while Jack Dixon’s follow up was blocked on the line.

Dixon forced a diving save out of away goalkeeper Rodney Chiweshe with a splendid effort from distance two minutes later, but Hampton almost won it in the dying seconds when East pulled off a good stop low to his left from Turner’s volley. It was United’s second goalless draw of the season.

United: East, Cox, Murphy, Carey, Richardson, Judge, Okojie (Ellis 64), Adams (Okojie 64), Hammond, Attwood, Camara. Subs not used: Freeman, Armstrong-Ford. Attendance: 422.
