Hastings skipper Ray on Rye radar

Sean Ray is the latest Hastings United ace to attract the attention of Rye United - and the Sussex County Leaguers are confident of getting their man.

The 30-year-old central defender and club captain has been the subject of a seven-day approach and Rye manager Scott Price believes he will soon be lining up alongside ex-Hastings players such as Sam Adams and Wes Tate.

“It’s massive really and I think it will be the lift we need at the moment. I’ve said all season it’s going to take a good player to break into our squad let alone into the team, but obviously he is that,” he said.

Ray, a big and powerful central defender who can also play up-front, has made 231 appearances and scored 32 goals for Hastings, including 11 so far this season.

He was fined by the club for playing for East Sussex League side Hollington United when Hastings were without a game on October 1 and has been on the substitutes’ bench for the last two league matches.

Hastings manager Jason Hopkinson said: “I’ve heard rumours he’s left but until he’s actually spoken to me I still consider him to be a Hastings player. I would expect my captain to talk to me about any issues he’s got.”

Price, who was best man at Ray’s wedding, expects the move to be completed in time for Ray to make his debut at home to East Grinstead Town next Saturday (October 29).
