Good starts for Rye and Sidley

Rye United and Sidley United made decent starts to the new football season yesterday (Saturday).

Sidley won 3-1 away to Worthing United and Rye drew 1-1 at Shoreham on the opening day of the 2012/13 Sussex County League Division One campaign.

John Lambert’s Sidley fell behind on 12 minutes, but Zack McEniry soon brought them level and Worthing were reduced to 10 men on the half-hour after Liam Miles was pulled down when through on goal.

Dominic Clarke headed Sidley into a half time lead and although the Blues weren’t at their best during the second period, Billy Trickett sealed the points with an 85th minute header.

Rye were disappointing during the first half against a useful Shoreham side and trailed to a penalty conceded by Sean Kelly, but bossed the second period and Matt Maclean earned them a point with 10 minutes remaining.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.

Rye’s match away to AFC Uckfield on Tuesday night has been postponed due to a floodlight problem. Sidley face a tough-looking trip to Peacehaven & Telscombe on Wednesday.
