Freeman insists his Rooks will fight until the end

Lewes Football Club boss Darren Freeman insists his side will keep going to try and stave off Ryman League Premier relegation.

The Rooks picked up two draws in their busy Easter programme with a goalless home draw with Wingate & Finchley being followed by a 2-2 draw at Merstham 48 hours later.

Those draws saw Lewes extend their unbeaten league run to six games but they have won just one of those.

Following the weekend fixtures, Rooks now trail fifth-bottom Needham Market and safety by 11-points with just four games to go.

However, Freeman is refusing to give up hope and wants his side to keep fighting for their Ryman Premier survival.

He said: “We’ve been on a good run of late and are unbeaten in six games after Monday’s draw.

“We’ll just keep going to the end and come the seasons close we will see where we are.

“In this league you never know and sometimes third or fourth-bottom can be given a reprieve due to ground grading rules.

“I’ve been impressed with us in this run of late and hopefully we can keep this going until the end of the season.”

If Lewes are to pull off one of the most unlikely escapes they will have to do it the hard way.

The Rooks have to face three of the current top-six teams in their final four games of the campaign.

A trip to sixth-placed Kingstonian awaits on Saturday, while games against East Thurrock and Dulwich Hamlet come in their final two outings.

But Freeman feels his side have matched all teams other than Bognor this season and fears no side heading into their run-in.

He added: “The only team that have given us a lesson this season I’d say have been Bognor. Other than that we have matched most teams in my time at this club. We know it’s going to be hard but I’m hopeful we can pull off the escape.

“A good place to start would be three points at Kingstonian on Saturday.”
