Fire service remembers 'Balchie': 'He leaves a huge void'

Paul Balch’s fire service colleagues have added their tributes to the many that have followed the sad news he has passed away.

He had served East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for two decades and his loss has been described as leaving a huge void.

It will come as a surprise to no-one that he took his love of sport into the fire service and encouraged colleagues to get involved too.

Max Gilbert, watch manager for Green Watch at Bohemia Road fire station, said: “Balchie was a well-loved hard working member of the fire service.

“During his 20 year career he attended a variety of incidents and always made sure the public was his priority.

“He started his career with East Sussex Fire Brigade on October 4, 1999 at the service training centre, Maresfield.

“His first posting was to Red Watch at The Ridge, starting there on February 21, 2000.

“After 15 years on red watch, Paul decided a change was needed and came to Green Watch at Bohemia Road, Hastings, starting here on July 14, 2015.

“He was a fitness fanatic and was always encouraging the watch into the gym or thinking up PT sessions for us. His taste of music in the gym was unique!

“He represented East Sussex Fire Service in the football team and was also a member of the golf society.

“He will be sorely missed and leaves a huge void. His cheeky smile and sense of humour will be a lasting memory for all of his colleagues.”
