Faltering Rye not giving up

Rye United manager Scott Price is not giving up on a first ever Sussex County Football League title.

But the Quarterboys’ hopes appear to be hanging by a thread because goal difference is all that’s keeping them above second-placed Three Bridges and Rye have played two more matches.

Price said: “We’ll keep going until we get told we’ve not won the league. I’m confident we’ll win our next two games, and if we’ve got to go to Three Bridges and win, I’m confident we will.”

Rye have just two league games remaining - at home to second-bottom and already relegated St Francis Rangers tomorrow (Saturday) and away to Bridges on Saturday April 28.

But that potential decider in a fortnight’s time will become academic if Bridges pick up seven points or more from home contests against fifth-placed Pagham tomorrow, rock-bottom Chichester City on Tuesday night and seventh-placed Peacehaven & Telscombe next weekend.

Lancing are four points behind Rye with a game in hand. Their remaining fixtures are at home to Lingfield tomorrow, at home to Pagham next weekend and away to AFC Uckfield on April 28.

Rye are the division’s most prolific scorers with 94 goals in 36 league matches, they possess the best goal difference and only three teams have beaten them. St Francis have won only one of their 36 league games to date.

Price says he will let Jack Franklin decide if he is fit following an ankle problem, while Luke Woodley could be involved against St Francis despite undergoing an operation on a facial injury sustained on March 3.

Jono Richardson is set to make his 200th competitive first team appearance for Rye at the age of 23. See today’s Rye Observer for the full article.
