There were surprises everywhere you looked in the East Sussex Football League's flagship cup competition on Saturday.

Four Division One teams knocked out Premier Division sides in round two of the Graham Ormston Premier Travel Challenge Cup - and they scored 20 goals between them, with Rye Town and Peche Hill Select both hitting their opponents for six.

Rye, who are fifth in the second tier, won 6-0 away to St Leonards Social despite having a player sent-off. Marcus Popple's brace, and one apiece from Tom Barlow, Craig Pierce, Alex Sarkies and Liam Sayer did the damage.

Peche Hill were equally dominant, winning 6-1 at home to a Northiam 75 outfit sitting fourth in the top flight thanks to a Sam Harris double, and one each by Jacob Shelton, Danny Woodley, Grant Cornelius and Sean Kelly. Oscar Garcia-Cruz provided the lone response for 10-man Northiam.

Division One leaders Bexhill AAC were also emphatic victors, continuing their unbeaten start to the season by triumphing 5-1 away to Robertsbridge United.

Ben Packer bagged a brace, and James Bailey, Oscar Hammond and David Pugh also found the net as AAC won away to Premier Division opposition for the second successive round. Liam Baker nabbed the Robertsbridge consolation.

Probably the biggest shock, however, was the tremendous 3-1 victory for Sedlescombe Rangers II at home to Battle Town, who have yet to drop a point in the Premier Division.

Sedlescombe were without a win in their previous four league matches, but stunned their higher grade opponents courtesy of two Isaac Perrin goals and a Sean Howard strike. Finlay Garlick netted for Battle.

The only tie where Premier Division got the better of Division One was Wadhurst United's 2-1 success away to South Coast Athletico - and even then Wadhurst had to overturn a half-time deficit after Bradley Owens had given Athletico a first-minute lead.

Rock-a-Nore ran out 2-0 winners in the all-Premier Division clash at home to Hawkhurst United, with Reece Johnson scoring both goals.

Sidley United II prevailed 5-0 at home to fellow Division One team Victoria Baptists via the finishing of Kel Radford (2), Harley Ransom, Corey Scott and Simon Tomlinson.

One Division One side is guaranteed to reach the semi-finals because Rye will host AAC in the quarter-finals. The rest of the draw sees Rock-a-Nore host Sedlescombe, Peche Hill at home to Wadhurst and Sidley entertaining Crowhurst or Bexhill Town.

There were far fewer eyebrow-raising results in round two of the Wisdens Sports Challenge Cup, where six Division Two teams and the Division Three leaders advanced to the quarter-finals.

Top billing should probably go to Northiam 75 II, who ran out 9-2 winners in an all-Division Two affair at home to Peche Hill Select II for the second consecutive Saturday, having also done so in the Robertsbridge Charity Junior Cup seven days previously.

Nine different players - Stephen Housago, Nathan Clemans, James Fielding, Luke Gasson, Jon James, Adam Golding, Scott Embery, Stuart Galbraith and Bradley Najair - were on the scoresheet for Northiam, who have now won three games in a row after losing their previous four. Kieren Martin and Regan Constable replied for Peche Hill.

Division Two pacesetters Little Common II made it seven wins out of seven in all competitions with a 5-2 victory away to Division Three side Hawkhurst United II.

Prolific hot shot Nick Kavanagh was again among the goals with a hat-trick, while Connor Jackson and Andrew McTear got the others for Common. Leon Fisher and Matthew Todd retaliated for Hawkhurst.

Dayne Beaumont, Terry Robinson and Dennis Wate were the men on the mark as Westfield II triumphed 3-1 at home to Bexhill AAC II, of Division Three. Dominic Sinden notched for AAC.

SC Pass + Move Arrows were run close by Division Three high-flyers Sandhurst before prevailing 3-2 away from home. The goals of Peter Matthews, Frazer Discala and Jonjo Wright were just enough for the Arrows, despite James Found adding two more strikes to his prolific tally for Sandhurst.

AFC Hollington triumphed 6-1 in the all-Division Three encounter at home to Old Town Lions, extending their winning run to five matches in all competitions.

Bobby Bowles and Doni Dovla netted twice each, while William Lelliot and Anton Neil also hit the target for Hollington. Sam Slayford got the Lions' consolation.

Bexhill Rovers received a walkover at home to Robertsbridge United II.

In the first round, Mountfield United celebrated their first win of the season after an Aaron Brindley goal gave them a 1-0 victory away to Division Three outfit The JC Tackleway II.

Mountfield will visit Herstmonceux this weekend for the right to visit AFC Hollington in the quarter-finals. The other last eight ties will see Pass + Move host Westfield, Little Common at home to Hastings United Youth or St Leonards Social II and Northiam entertain Bexhill Rovers.

The quarter-final line-up in the Division Four & Five Challenge Cup was completed after Hastings Comets won 4-0 at home to higher grade West Hill United.

Tyler Wilson, Luke Darvill, Nick Pelling and Martin Cattermole scored for the Comets in the last first-round game to be played. They will travel to Hooe in the last eight.

Ten league fixtures were contested amid all the cup action and there are new leaders in the Premier Division.

Crowhurst hit the front - three points above previous pacesetters Rock-a-Nore having played an extra match - on the back of a 5-1 win away to Bexhill Town.

Tom Frazer-Bates scored twice, and Jan Bailey, Ashley Kidman and Allan McMinigal once each as the Crows extended their unbeaten run to four matches. Olwethu Peterson claimed the Bexhill goal.

Herstmonceux climbed two places to third in Division Two by virtue of a 5-0 victory at home to eighth-placed St Leonards Social II.

William Hobden (2), Charlie Levi, Connor Middleton and Joe Gardiner struck for Herstmonceux, who are now just two points behind second-placed Bexhill Rovers having played an extra match.

Hastings United Youth rose from sixth to fourth in Division Three after winning 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller away to a Hampden Park side which dropped a place to sixth.

Two goals apiece from Dan Kearley and Rhys Morfee got the job done for the Hastings youngsters, even though Callum Langford, Jake Lewis and Craig Crowther found the net for Park.

Icklesham Casuals remain a point clear at the summit of Division Four following a 4-1 win away to Sedlescombe Rangers development.

The goals of Jack Pullin, Bradley Mepham, Phil Badrock and Joe Fraser earned Icklesham their fourth league victory out of five. Matthew Davey responded for a Sedlescombe side which slipped a place to seventh.

With Hooe not playing, Sovereign Saints II moved up to second through a narrow 4-3 success away to fellow Eastbourne team Parkfield.

Strikes by David Wisdom (2), Travis Anderson and Nicholas Barden for the Saints just eclipsed those of Aaron French, Mohamed Morzek and Calum Nolan for Parkfield, who dropped a position to fifth.

Welcroft Park Rangers jumped from sixth to third on the strength of their 3-1 triumph away to eighth-placed Orington.

Two Jamie Bundy goals - making him the division's outright leading scorer with 10 in all competitions - and one from Kirk Ferguson secured Welcroft Park's third league win of the campaign.

Battle Town III chalked up their first league victory of the term in fine style, running out 5-0 winners at home to Magham Down.

Ben Thorpe (2), Jack Austen, James McGrath and Linton Rogers were on the scoresheet as Battle moved within a point of Orington.

AFC Hollington II and Wadhurst United II remain neck and neck at the top of Division Five after winning their respective matches, albeit in rather contrasting fashion.

Hollington - who are top on goal difference - emerged 9-2 victors away to Welcroft Park Rangers II, with Jules Phillips plundering a four-goal salvo, Tom Whelan banging in a hat-trick, and John Walker and Sam Logan also scoring. The goals of George Jones and Simon Pelling couldn't prevent Welcroft Park sliding to the foot of the table on goal difference.

Wadhurst had to work rather harder for their three points, winning 2-1 at home to a Herstmonceux II side which climbed above Welcroft Park despite being narrowly beaten.

Ticehurst triumphed 3-1 at home to Hampden Park u23 and clambered above their victims - again on goal difference - into the top four.

A Jack Savage brace and one from Toby Tapp gave Ticehurst the points, in spite of Paul Weatherby scoring for Hampden Park.
