Crunch time in Rye’s season

The next four days may well determine whether Rye United are to have any chance of winning the Sussex County Football League title.

Rye travel to third-placed Peacehaven & Telscombe tonight (Wednesday) before heading to fifth-placed East Preston on Saturday in two key games towards the upper echelons of Division One.

The Quarterboys put last week’s upheaval behind them to draw 3-3 at home to sixth-placed Hassocks on Saturday in the first match for new joint bosses Marc Gall and Anthony Storey.

Tonight could well be an even tougher assignment with Peacehaven knowing that a win will take them back to the top of the table and eager to return to winning ways having picked up just one point from their last two outings.

The teams have met twice at The Salts this season. The reverse fixture at the start of October ended in a 1-1 draw, while Peacehaven ran out impressive 4-0 winners in a John O’Hara League Challenge Cup tie at the end of the same month.

Rye are currently in eighth place having played fewer games than anybody else in the division. Even after tonight they will still have 17 league fixtures to cram in before the season’s end on April 27. Kick-off at The Sports Park is 7.45pm.

Sussex County League Division One top eight (played-points): 1 Ringmer 32-60, 2 Redhill 28-59, 3 Peacehaven & Telscombe 26-58, 4 Pagham 28-56, 5 East Preston 25-55, 6 Hassocks 33-54, 7 East Grinstead Town 30-50, 8 RYE UNITED 24-49.
