Common target Bexhill strike ace

Little Common have responded to the news that top-scorer Jamie Crone is expected to miss the rest of the season by making an enquiry for Bexhill United’s master marksman Steve Morris.

Common put in a seven-day approach for Morris last Friday and intend to speak to the powerful striker today (Friday). Morris - who has spoken to his current boss Darrol Parris about the transfer - is supposedly keen to hear what Common player-manager Russell Eldridge has to say before he makes his mind up over his future.

Eldridge said: “You’re never confident until the papers are signed, but fingers crossed at the weekend when we speak to him he will be on board. If we can get him, that will be a really good signing for the last 10 games or so.”

A move back to Common would see the 14-goal man link-up with former strike partner Lewis Hole, although Morris is due to begin a two-game ban this weekend. The pair formed a prolific partnership as Common finished fourth in Sussex County Football League Division Two three seasons ago.

The move comes after 29-goal hotshot Crone was sidelined with medial knee ligament damage, which was sustained during the game at Storrington two weeks ago.

“Jamie’s out for the season unfortunately,” Eldridge continued. “He went to see the doctor this week to sort out a referral for an MRI scan. It’s a bad blow for him and for us, especially at this stage of the season when you want your best players available.

“He’s been one of the better players because of the amount of goals he’s scored. I feel for him because I think he’s on 25 league goals and he probably would’ve gone on to get at least 30 goals in the league.”

Bexhill and Common will be eager to return to Sussex Division Two action tomorrow after both had their games postponed last weekend as a result of waterlogged pitches. Sixth-placed Common will host second-placed Littlehampton Town, while eighth-placed Bexhill are away to leaders Newhaven.
