The high-flying Commoners have issued a seven-day approach for Drew Greenall as they prepare to contest three key away matches in the next eight days.

Common are seeking to finish in one of the three Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One promotion places.

“We have put an approach in for Drew,” confirmed Common player-manager Russell Eldridge. “We don’t know what’s going to happen, but if you don’t make an approach, you never know.

“When we played them (Bexhill) on Boxing Day, he was one of the players who impressed me, one of their better players I thought.”

Greenall, who had a short spell at Common several years ago, has scored goals since joining Bexhill in October.

Bexhill joint manager Ryan Light said: “Little Common will speak to him at the end of the week and we’ll see what happens from there.

“We would like Drew to stay. He’s been great for us and we would love him to continue with us. He hasn’t indicated that he’s got any reason to leave.”

Common’s approach for Greenall comes after forward Jamie Crone sustained a knee injury against Storrington a fortnight ago which could sideline him for the rest of the season.

“Jamie’s definitely going to be missing this week,” continued Eldridge, who admitted he considered an approach for Greenall back in the autumn when Crone decided, very briefly as it turned out, to take a break from football. “It’s not looking promising, which is disappointing for us and for himself as well.

“It’s a difficult stage of the season to try and get players in and make changes etc with so few games left. We’ve had to do what we can to make sure we have the strength we’ve had through the season, especially at this stage of the season where we’ve got a lot to play for.”

Third-placed Common will travel to fourth-placed Mile Oak tomorrow (Saturday) before facing Langney Wanderers on Tuesday night and second-placed Saltdean United next Saturday.

Common, who were fixtureless last weekend, are two points above tomorrow’s opponents with two games in hand. So if they avoid defeat tomorrow, Common will have a great opportunity to finish in the top three at the very least.

“You could argue that it’s going to define and determine how our season will end with three games in seven days,” added Eldridge, whose team trails Saltdean by four points and leaders East Preston by five having played a match fewer than both.

“I don’t think the fixture computer could’ve dealt us three tougher games, all away from home. It’s going to be a tough week.

“Our first priority is our first game on Saturday away at Mile Oak. Their last couple of results haven’t helped them, but I’m sure they’ll be looking to rectify that and it’s a difficult place to go.

“We had a tough game at the Rec against them (October’s reverse fixture ended in a 3-3 draw), but we’ll be positive and every game we look to try and get the three points.”

Common are the division’s leading scorers with 86 goals in 28 league games, 14 of which have come in winning their last three fixtures. The first of those three was a 7-1 thrashing of a Langney side which knocked them out of two cup competitions earlier in the campaign.
