Common hit six of the best in biggest win this season

Common continued their unbeaten home league record with a comfortable 6-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Ringmer on Saturday.

Common were missing Dan Cruikshank, Harry Saville, Lewis Hole, Dave Ammoun and Martin Denny from the win over AFC Uckfield Town four days previously, and gave starts to under-18 players Rosh Wells and Louis Walker in a much-changed squad.

Common began the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One match on the front foot and fashioned two early chances. Jamie Crone miscued after cutting in from the right before blazing an effort over the crossbar.

The visitors did fashion an opportunity of their own, but Common goalkeeper Matt Cruttwell did well to save a shot which zipped off the greasy surface with his legs.

The Commoners took the lead in the 15th minute when Walker’s ball over the top found Wes Tate in the penalty area and his first time effort looped over the visiting goalkeeper into the net.

Ringmer continued to look lively in the final third without ever threatening Cruttwell’s goal and it was Common who extended their lead in the 27th minute. The Ringmer goalkeeper completely misjudged a George Aston free kick and Zack McEniry had the simplest of tasks to knock the ball into an empty net.

Adam Smith almost made it three, but his close range effort was saved on the line and Dom Bristow burst into the area only to see his effort deflected away. From the resultant corner, McEniry made it 3-0 when he hooked Russell Eldridge’s delivery into the top corner of the net.

Ringmer nearly pulled a goal back following a rare attack, but saw an effort cannon off the post. Common added a fourth just before half time when Smith capitalised on a defensive error before smashing the ball home.

Common could and should have extended their lead early in the second half. Crone saw an effort curl past the post before narrowly missing the target following a neat pull-back from Tate.

Tate himself rattled the crossbar before blasting Common’s fifth into the roof of the net following Crone’s lay-off.

At the other end, Cruttwell produced a fine save from a Ringmer free kick. The scoring was completed three minutes from time when Crone cut in from the left and fired an effort beyond the visiting goalkeeper from close range.
