Common couple sample the Wembley way

Little Common Football Club stalwarts Ken and Margaret Cherry had a great day out at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The Bidwell Avenue-based couple were among the nominations for the Outstanding Contribution category at The FA and McDonald’s Community Awards in recognition of their commitment to Little Common over an incredible 45 years.

Ken, who had visited the old Wembley but hadn’t previously been to the new version, said: “We had a really good day. We thoroughly enjoyed it and I think everyone did. It’s a magnificent place.”

Margaret, Ken and their grandchildren - the Eldridge brothers Daniel, Russell and Chris - enjoyed a three course meal among guests such as Sir Geoff Hurst, Pat Jennings, Ian Rush, Gary Pallister, Joe Royle, James Corden and Andrew Flintoff in the FA Club.

After that, The FA and McDonald’s Community Awards, presented by the BBC’s F1 frontman Jake Humphrey, were held. Although Ken and Margaret just missed out on the top accolade, they were highly commended by the judging panel.

They then enjoyed the FA Community Shield clash between Manchester City and Manchester United before post-match interviews back in the FA Club.

Since founding the Sussex County League club in 1966, Ken and Margaret have given hundreds of youngsters the opportunity to get into the sport and progress through the ranks.
