Bexhill hit back for away point

Goals from Jack Woodward and Andy Garman clinched a 2-2 draw against Southwick in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One.

Bexhill manager Marc Munday said: “The first 20 minutes they were the better side, but from that point it was all us and we were unlucky not to come away with the three points. I genuinely feel we deserved to win the game on the last 70 minutes.”

Playing a 4-5-1 formation, the Pirates started slowly and could well have been behind early on had it not been for a good save by Bexhill goalkeeper Yankuba Camara.

Just as the visitors were coming in to the game, Southwick opened the scoring midway through the first half aided by a large slice of good fortune. The ball struck the referee and put the hosts through on goal, Thomas Donnelly applying the finish.

Although Southwick deserved their lead at that point, Bexhill seemed to take control during the remainder of the first half. They continued in the same fashion after the break when they dealt much better with Southwick’s balls in between Bexhill’s centre-half and full-back to the pacy winger.

Bexhill equalised on 76 minutes through a fantastic strike by Woodward, who enjoyed a decent game on his return from suspension. Southwick retook the lead just four minutes later, though, when Donnelly was given time to control a ball across the box and pick his spot.

But Bexhill weren’t finished and restored parity for a second time in the 87th minute when Garman was put through and finished well. Bexhill finished the stronger and George Aston clipped the top of the crossbar with a header right on the final whistle.
