Lee Wood has stood down as Bexhill United assistant manager

The well respected ‘Woody’ has been number two at The Polegrove since Darrol Parris took sole charge of the team back in January last year.

“I can confirm that it’s the end of Woody at Bexhill for the moment,” Parris said. “It’s a shame, but he’s decided he’s not happy with things at the moment and his commitments lie elsewhere, and I can’t blame him for that.”

Wood was due to help Parris for the Hastings & District FA Senior Cup game against Sidley United last night (Thursday) until it was postponed to make way for Sidley’s rearranged league game against Lancing.

“I’ll be on my own tomorrow,” said Parris. “I’ve sounded someone out about coming in, but nothing has happened yet and I don’t expect that to change before the weekend.”

Wood was given much of the credit for Bexhill’s splendid finish to last season, which was highlighted by winning the Hastings Senior Cup in a dramatic final against cross-town rivals Sidley.

This season also began well with Bexhill unbeaten in Sussex County Football League Division Two until the start of December, as well as taking some higher level scalps in the cup competitions. But things have tailed off lately as Bexhill have won just once since Boxing Day and now sit eighth in the table.

Wood wrote on social network site Twitter yesterday: “Disappointed the Bexhill game was changed tonight, would have been good to say goodbye to the lads properly. Hopefully it will now be realised what an immense set of lads Bexhill have.

“I will miss them all massively and I’m so proud to have been a part of some fantastic achievements at the club. I will miss them all so much and I wish everyone at Bexhill all the best.”
