FOOTBALL: Rebels' striker Treleaven prefers wins to goals

REBELS' on-loan striker Ross Treleaven has refused to set a goal target as Worthing battle at the top of Ryman League Division 1 South.

Treleaven, 22, who is on loan from Conference South Eastbourne Borough, scored 17 goals last season and has notched five so far this campaign, but said: "I want to score as many as possible but I haven't set myself a target.

"I think that if you set yourself a target, you can become a selfish player. It's not all about scoring goals, it's about the team winning.

"If I can pass to someone to have a tap-in, it's just as good as scoring a goal.

"Last year, I was the one finishing the chances off but this year it's other players but I've set up a lot more, which is really good."

The hard-working striker is hoping to figure for Eastbourne Borough before the end of the season and said: "I definitely want to get involved there this year.

"Everyone wants to play as high as they can and set their sights high.

"I've had a couple of chances to be involved and could have been last week in the FA Trophy, but was injured.

"In the meantime, I'll keep doing as well as I can for Worthing."

Treleaven is hoping to be back fit for Rebels' game at Burgess Hill on Boxing Day, and on the rest of Worthing's season, said: "Our aims are just to finish as high as possible.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on ourselves by saying we are going to win the league. That talk should be saved until the last 10 games of the season.

"Things are going really well but we've had such terrible luck with injuries. I think everyone in the squad has been injured or ill at some stage this season, which isn't great for continuity.

"But we are still playing well and other people are saying we have a chance of doing something. We just need to get a bit of luck.

"Obviously, this season, we're playing a different style of football.

Last year, with Ben Andrews, I just ran on to his flicks. This year, we've not got that, so I'm doing more of that, so are other players, and we're playing more football.

"Everyone wants to play in a winning team and we're all enjoying it."
