Runners have been quick to sign up for The 1066 Way to Battle, which will take place on Sunday October 16, and entries are well on schedule for the 1066 limit.

Part of the 950th anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Hastings, this historic and scenic event will be held over a tough approximately 17-mile course.

It will start at the Roman Arch of Pevensey Castle at 9am and runners will make their way via the grounds of Herstmonceux Castle to the finish at Battle Abbey.

The rural route will also take in the village of Hankham and other landmarks of note will include The Bulls Head pub in Boreham Street and The Ash Tree Inn at Ashburnham and The White Hart pub in Catsfield.

Along their way they will travel along footpaths, tracks and lanes, as well as across fields, and over styles and bridges. The ground will be rutted in some areas, there will be tree roots and animal holes to watch out for, and certain areas could be muddy if wet. It will be well-marshalled and signed.

Race director Eric Hardwick MBE was out on Sunday walking part of the route and inspecting it when he came across Lorna and Matt, from St Leonards, in the proverbial middle of nowhere.

Lorna mentioned she had entered the event and was checking it out, and was amazed to find that she had met the race director in doing so! She ran her first Hastings Half Marathon earlier in year and is looking forward to the October race.

All monies raised from the event, which is being sponsored by 1066 Country, will be used by Battle and Villages Lions Club for the community.
