Digweed is best of British

George Digweed rounded-off possibly his best ever year with yet another victory at the weekend.

Northiam-based Digweed won the British Open Sporting Clay Shooting Championship at the West Midlands Shooting Ground in Hodnet.

Remarkably, it was the sixth time that Digweed had captured that particular title across four different decades. His previous successes came in 2000, 1995, 1994, 1991 and 1989.

Digweed shot 117/120 - hitting eight out of eight on 12 of the 15 rounds and seven out of eight on rounds three, four and 11 - to finish three clear of runner-up Paul Lovick and six ahead of third-placed Steve Brightwell.

Hodnet holds a special place in Digweed’s heart because it was here that he made his initial major breakthrough in the sport by winning the World Sporting Championship some 23 years ago.

The 47-year-old has now won an incredible 19 World Championship titles - 11 in Sporting and eight in FITASC - 11 European FITASC titles, three European Compak crowns and nine World Cups during a glittering career.

This year alone, Digweed has triumphed three times in the United States, twice in South Africa, and once in New Zealand, France and Russia, as well as several big shoots in the UK.
