He then lost by the same score to good friend Barry Hawkins, the world no.22 who won the Snooker Shoot-Out in January, despite a magnificent 128 break in frame two.

Davis was edged out 3-2 by world no.5 Shaun Murphy, who didn’t score a point in frames three and four as Davis compiled breaks of 92 and 61.

He ended the first day’s play with another 3-2 loss against seventh-ranked World Open winner Allen having again rallied from two-down with runs of 100 and 71.

Davis started day two with a 3-1 reverse at the hands of eighth-ranked Welsh Open champion Ding, the eventual winner. Davis made a break of 50 in winning frame two against the Chinese star.
