Davis beats Maguire again

Snooker star Mark Davis beat world no.7 Stephen Maguire for the second time this season on Tuesday morning.

The St Leonards cueman, ranked 20, chalked up an excellent 5-3 victory over the Scot in round one of the China Open having also knocked him out of the Shanghai Masters back in September.

A break of 64 gave Davis the opening frame 65-8, and although Maguire made a 75 to take the second 101-11, Davis bagged the third 96-25 with an 88 and edged the fourth 66-41 despite a top run of just 21 to go 3-1 up.

Maguire, a four-time ranking event winner and former world no.2, rattled through the fifth 102-0 thanks to a 97 and squared the match for a second time at 3-3 by netting the sixth 62-20.

But Davis got his nose in front again at 4-3 by clinching frame seven 79-5 courtesy of a 73 before sealing victory in style with a sparkling 137 break - the equal highest of the tournament so far - in the eighth.

Davis, the 2009 Six Reds World Champion, is due to face 17th-ranked Marco Fu or 25th-ranked Judd Trump in the last 16 on Thursday morning.
