St Leonards-based Davis, the world number 16, lost five of the seven frames in the final session this afternoon (Monday) to miss out on a first ever quarter-final appearance at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

The pair had been locked together at 4-4 after the first session yesterday morning and 8-8 after the second session yesterday evening, but Bingham rattled through the first frame of the third session 77-0 with all his points coming in a single visit.

Davis looked set to get back on level terms again when a 58 break put him in charge of the next only for Bingham to come from 57 points behind to pinch it 71-58 via a 70 clearance for a 10-8 lead.

Reigning Six Reds World Champion Davis put that setback behind him to capture the 19th frame 71-44 and a run of 58 gave him the 20th 69-17 to make it 10-10 at the interval.

It was all Bingham after that, though, as the Essex cueman reeled off three in a row for the loss of just 25 points to surge into the last eight. A 111 gave him the 21st frame 111-0, a 57 helped him clinch the 22nd 95-14 and he sealed victory by winning the 23rd 103-11.

Despite the defeat, it’s been a tremendous season for Davis, who stunned four-time champion John Higgins 10-6 in round one. The 40-year-old reached three full ranking event semi-finals at the Wuxi Classic, Australian Goldfields Open and UK Championship.
