Darts ace claims notable scalps

ST LEONARDS' hot darting property Adrian Gray has claimed a couple more high profile scalps during a hectic recent schedule.

The 23-year-old world number 52 saw off a pair of players in the top 25 and was only beaten by the overall winner in one event, a UK Open qualifier in another and a top five ranked player in the third.

His best performance was reaching the last 16 of the PDPA Players' Championship in Wales on Saturday. His run took in a 3-1 victory over 11th ranked Dennis Ovens in the last 64 and a 3-2 success over 23rd ranked Lionel Sams in the last 32. He was eventually beaten 3-2 by eventual champion and world number six Wayne Mardle, who overcame living legend Phil Taylor in the semi-finals.

Gray also got to the last 32 of the Budweiser UK Open Welsh Regional Qualifier where he lost 5-1 to fifth-ranked Roland Scholten of Holland after seeing off Gary Dellow 5-3. He missed out on booking a slot in the finals of the Skybet World Grand Prix but it took one of the four qualifiers to remove him. The man that did so was highly-rated 19-year-old Adrian Lewis, the recently crowned Chris de Roo Open champion.
