Wernars stars in Sussex win

Hastings Priory all-rounder Kirk Wernars played a key role as Sussex Sharks beat Warwickshire Bears last night (Wednesday).

Batting at number eight, the big South African was the second highest scorer with 37 not out off 39 balls as Sussex totalled 199-9 batting first in the televised Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at Hove.

Wernars also shared a seventh wicket partnership of exactly 50 with former Priory and Battle cricketer Michael Yardy, who top-scored with 61 from 91 balls, after Sussex had been struggling at 129-6.

The two men then opened the bowling for Sussex and although both were wicketless, Yardy conceded just 23 runs from his eight overs. Warwickshire were all out for 182, meaning Sussex won by 17 runs.

Another Priory player, Matt Machan, was in the Sussex squad but didn’t make the final XI. Sussex are top of Group C with five wins from their six completed matches.
