Newly-promoted Priory came within one wicket of winning away to reigning champions Roffey last weekend, losing by the narrowest of margins.

Priory coach Ian Gillespie said: “I don’t know whether they will be winners this season, but they’re a team that’s going to be in the top four, and we’ve stood toe-to-toe with them and were unlucky not to have won the game.

“It was nip and tuck, and it swayed both ways. It could’ve gone our way on another day, but equally it was a fair result probably.”

Priory are fifth in the early league table having won one and lost one of their first two games, although only 10 points separate third from second-to-bottom.

“The proof of the pudding will be if we can win games,” Gillespie added. “It looks like it’s going to be a tight league judging by the early results.

“We’ve got to make sure we can be consistent, try and play at that sort of level or better every game, and make sure we get the wins we need and keep the momentum we’ve got.”

Priory will be aiming to make it two home wins out of two when they face Brighton & Hove tomorrow (Saturday).

Gillespie said: “The last few years they’ve been struggling a little bit and we would see them as someone we want to take good points off this season. We would like to think we’ve got a good chance of winning if we play to the levels we did Saturday.

“They had a good win themselves so they will be buoyant. It’s going to be an interesting game, but potentially it’s a game we can win if we play well. Two wins in the first three would be a great start.”

Priory have received some good news following an injury scare to Adam Barton.

“Adam’s still got bruising on his Achilles, but it looks as though he’s going to be fit to play on Saturday so it’s not anywhere near as serious as we thought it was going to be,” Gillespie said.
