Priory triumphed by two wickets in their latest Sussex Premier League fixture at Horntye Park against fourth-placed opposition.

“It was a cracking game of cricket,” said Priory coach Gillespie. “I think we put in a really good bowling shift, as we have done a number of times this season.

“The seamers (John Morgan and Finn Hulbert) bowled very well, very tight, and then our spinners came on and really took the game away from them. Jed (O’Brien) bowled superbly, Elliot (Hooper) bowled very well and they (Horsham) were always struggling really to get on top.

“In reply, James Pooley played superbly. He hit the ball very cleanly when it was in his areas and got a very quick-fire 40 which really put us in the driving seat.

“They’ve got two professional or ex-professional spinners and we had a couple of little wobbles, but we held our nerve and batted very sensibly.

“Some good contributions from Jed and Tom (Gillespie) just really steered us home. It got a little bit tense towards the end, but Joe (Lamb) and Harry (Scowen) held their nerve and we were deserving winners. It was a really good win for us.”

Fifth-placed Priory will go in search of an eighth Sussex Premier League win of the summer tomorrow (Saturday) away to a Billingshurst side fighting relegation.

Gillespie said: “We played very, very well at home when we beat them handsomely. They’re probably a little bit stronger (now), they’re battling for their lives and they’ve had some good results. We want to go there and play some really good, positive cricket and hopefully we can come out on top.

“We’ve got four games that potentially we could win I think and if we can win one or two of those games, we’re going to have a very creditable finish I think.”
