Two wins from three to stay up

The cricketers of Bexhill and Sidley targeting two wins from their final three games to stay up.

Bexhill are 24 points adrift of safety in the Sussex Premier League, while Sidley, who like Bexhill were promoted last summer, must bridge a 26-point deficit in Division Two.

“It’s going to be so tight, but we’ve done really well this year to keep it alive,” said Bexhill captain Malcolm Johnson. “We’ve still given ourselves a chance to stay up and I’m really pleased.”

Bottom-of-the-table Eastbourne are 26 points behind Bexhill and must win their game in hand against the Sussex Development XI on Sunday to overtake them.

Chichester Priory Park now occupy the final safe spot of third-bottom, although the teams placed fifth to eighth are separated by just four points.

Bexhill’s next two matches are at The Polegrove – where they’ve won three of their last four in the league. The first of them is against leaders Horsham tomorrow (Saturday).

In-form spin bowler Jamie Bristow-Diamond is expected to return to the side having missed the last two games through holiday with Liam Bryant making way. Play is due to get under way from 12noon.

It’s make or break time for Sidley, meanwhile, when they entertain Ifield tomorrow. With Ifield holding the final safe spot of third-bottom, rock-bottom Sidley really need to beat the Crawley outfit to keep their hopes alive.

Sidley captain John Haffenden said: “We’ve got to win two out of three to stand any chance. I think we’ve got to win our two home games against Ifield and Findon (who visit Gullivers on September 1).”

Paul Nice is expected to return to the Sidley line-up. Play is due to get under way from 12.30pm at Gullivers. See today’s Bexhill Observer for the full article.
