Sussex star can’t prevent Bexhill loss
Sussex professional Ashar Zaidi made his first Bexhill Cricket Club appearance of the season on Saturday, but couldn’t prevent a second straight defeat.
Bexhill went down by 87 runs away to reigning Sussex Premier League champions Roffey as their performance with the bat again fell short of the standards set with the ball.
Once again Bexhill won the toss and inserted the opposition following heavy overnight rain. Bexhill got off to a good start and Roffey were 84-5 at one stage, and it could have been even better for the visitors had a relatively simple slip catch been taken.
A sixth wicket partnership of 58 got Roffey back on track before Bexhill took four wickets for 25 runs to leave the home side 167-9.
Roffey added 47 for the last wicket to reach 214 all out, with Matt Davies finishing 61 not out and last man Leigh Harrison making 29.
Zaidi, who gave Bexhill a bit more control, was the most successful bowler with 4-55 off 20 overs. Dean Crawford and Shawn Johnson took two wickets each, and there was one for Callum Guest.
Bexhill lost wickets every couple of overs in reply as batsmen seemed to come in, bash a four and get out. Of the top order, only Johnson (32) batted well.
Cameron Burgon (18) tried to stay around, but Bexhill were 82-9 until a last wicket stand of 45 - the highest of the innings - from 89 balls at least took them into three figures before they were all out for 127.
Nick Peters batted very maturely for an 18-year-old in only his sixth Premier League game to finish 39 not out. Three Roffey bowlers took three wickets each.
Standings (played six matches unless stated): 1 Preston Nomads 158pts, 2 Roffey 153, 3 Cuckfield (7) 125, 4 East Grinstead 121, 5 Brighton & Hove (7) 114, 6 Eastbourne (7) 105, 7 BEXHILL 97, 8 Billingshurst 94, 9 Horsham 87, 10 Middleton 82.
