Sussex League round-up: Leaders extend gap as derby shock pegs back champions

Horsham climbed the Sussex League Premier Division table by inflicting Roffey with their second defeat of the season in the weekend’s big derby clash.

The reigning champions remain second despite being beaten by five wickets at Cricketfield Road.

They posted 189 after being inserted as Mike Norris and Ben Manenti both hit 42, before the hosts replied with 190-5 thanks to John Burrough’s 100.

Preston Nomads continue to lead the way at the top after a four-wicket win away at Billingshurst.

Rob Wakeford (71) topscored as they chased their host’s score of 136 for the loss of six wickets.

Opener Stuart Barber hit 66 for Hurst, who slipped second bottom, while Carl Simon, Kashif Ibrahim and Stephen Rigg all took three wickets.

Bexhill completed a four-wicket victory over Cuckfield at the Polegrove.

Cuckfield’s Roston Chase hit 67 and Nick Patterson made 45 as they won the toss and batted first, making 176.

Dean Crawford claimed figures of 5-28.

In reply, Malcolm Johnson scored 63 and Callum Guest hit 40 in their 178-6.

Middleton jumped the table with a four-wicket triumph as the Nevill Sports Ground against Brighton & Hove.

Chris Atherton’s sides posted 193 as Jofra Archer again scored with the ball, taking 4-56.

An all-round contribution with the bat saw Middleton knock off the total in 57 overs with 195-6.

Third-placed East Grinstead eased to a nine-wicket win over Eastbourne at the Saffrons.

The hosts, batting first, scored 122, before East Grinstead eased home for the loss of just one wicket.

Craig Chacopa took 4-38 with the ball, while Will Adkin scored an unbeaten 69.

Division 2 leaders Pagham won a tight game at Three Bridges with just 15 balls to spare.

The visitors notched up their fifth win of the campaign with an 11-run victory.

Winning the toss and batting, Pagham scored 227 as Joe Turner topscored with 64 and Eranga Dissangge made 55.

Michael Rose took 5-57 with the ball, before Bridges replied with 216 all out in 46.3 overs.

Second-placed Hastings & St Leonards Priory beat second-bottom side Ansty by a comfortable 111 runs.

Hastings, batting first at Horntye Park, scored 252-5 in 50 overs thanks to scores of 46 from Joe Billings, 54 from Elliott Hooper and an unbeaten 54 from Jake Woolley.

Ansty posted 141 in 38.2 overs as Hooper took 3-15 with the ball.

Ifield put some distance between themselves as basement side Crowborough Park with a three-wicket win.

Park scored 205-7 as captain Paul Brookes topscored with 56, but a starring role from Russell Jacob with the ball saw him claim 7-36.

Ifield then chased down the total in 43.2 overs with 205-7. Jack Groves led the way with 37 and Simon Hickey then scored 32 not out.

Findon leapfrogged Worthing with a four-wicket victory in the South Coast derby clash.

The visitors scored 188-7 in their 53 overs as Benn Challen topscored with 62. James Iago claimed 3-55 and Curtis Howell helped himself to 4-55 with the ball.

The Long Furlong club then got home with 189-6 in the 46th over. Glenn Bridson’s knock of 62 not out led the way.

Third-placed Lindfield beay St James’s at home by 28 runs.

Max O’Dowd scored 42 in the host’s 146 after they won the toss and then claimed 5-51 as St James’s replied with 118.

Division 3 leaders Bognor completed their sixth win of the season over third-placed Burgess Hill.

The visitors won by 57 runs after winning the toss and posting 195-8.

Elliott Clarke scored 67 and Zayne Bux 57, before Burgess Hill replied with 138.

With the ball, Peter Billinghay took 5-57 and Graham Bush 5-33.

Chichester Priory Park and Glynde & Beddingham drew as the latter replied with 220-4 to Chichester’s 281-4 declared.

Jonny Phelps hit 85 and Isaac Leckie 78 for Haywards Heath as they drew with Rottingdean.

The visitors posted 258-4, while Rottingdean replied with 206-9 as their last pair held out.

Second-placed Crawley Eagles beat Portslade at the Benfield Valley Pavilion by four wickets.

Imran Mehboob claimed 8-40 as the hosts were skittled for 87 and Eagles eased home with 88-6.

Steyning claimed their second win of the season with a six-wicket triumph over struggling Goring.

Goring scored 162-9 after losing the toss and Dave Kennett’s side replied with 165-4 thanks to an unbeaten 53 from Oliver Collins and 44 not out from Stephen Chimhamhiwa.

Division 4 front runners Slinfold’s 100 per cent record was ended as they drew their local derby with Southwater.

The hosts scored 294-9 as they won the toss and batted with skipper Johann Brouwer hitting 50 and Andy Carvell 42.

Tom Filby took 5-81 before his side replied with 246-9. Paul Osborne hit 67 before their last pair held out for the draw.

Mayfield leapfrogged Slinfold at the top of the table with a 166-run victory over Stirlands at the Wellbrook Ground.

Both sides are level on 193 points at the top of the table.

Mayfield posted 242-8 and Stirlands could muster just 76 in reply as Benjamin Saunders took 7-26 from 12.4 overs.

Basement side Hellingly won the battle at the bottom of the table at home to Wisborough Green.

Wisborough scored 139 after being put in and Hellingly eased home with 145-4 thanks to Greg Devlin’s unbeaten 81 and James Pooley’s 60 not out.

Henfield (116-6) clinched a four-wicket win at home to Keymer & Hassocks (115).

Crawley (172) beat third-placed Rye (140) by 32 runs at Southgate Park.

Kunal Kapoor scored 53 for Crawley and then took 5-43 with the ball, while Rye Kshermal Waingankar took 6-57.
