Stalwart Mick shortlisted for national award

Waghorn, who lives in Little Common, made the top three of the lifetime achievement category at the NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards (OSCAs).

The 69-year-old had won the Sussex County OSCA the previous week for his voluntary contribution to Bexhill CC, and the wider Bexhill and Hastings cricket community, spanning more than 50 years.

A batsman during his playing days, Waghorn has held down a number of roles at Bexhill CC down the years, including committee member, team secretary, fixtures secretary and official associate.

He said: “I’m very honoured to have been put forward for the award. I’d like to thank those who put my name forward; it was certainly an unexpected surprise.”

As well as helping with the administrative side of the club, Waghorn’s groundsman skills have also been instrumental in turning the St Mary’s Lane ground into a home venue for Bexhill’s lower level sides.

Though the club has received some backing from the ECB - which provided machinery - the majority of funding and work has come internally. Waghorn and several others have worked on the project out of a love for the club.

He said: “The club needs investment and this is just one step; it gives the lower ranked sides a chance to play easily at home. I’m very happy to be actively involved with the club for so long and I’ve met many wonderful people who have become very good friends.”
