Sidley geared up for top two clash

Sidley return to action with a hugely significant game in their quest for the title.

Sussex Cricket League Division Three (East) leaders Sidley make the short journey to second-placed Hellingly tomorrow (Saturday) with the winners sure to be in pole position to clinch top spot.

Sidley captain Scott Woodroffe said: “Now we’ve got to where we are, it’s the biggest game of the season. Everyone’s looking forward to it I’m sure. We always have good games against Hellingly and they’re always played in a good spirit.”

While Sidley were on their free week last weekend, results elsewhere couldn’t have gone much better for them. Lindfield went into their game against Crowhurst Park lying second, but failed to pick up a single point in a nine-wicket defeat.

Seaford could also have overhauled them had they won away to Hellingly, but lost by 67 runs. Hellingly are now Sidley’s closest challengers with just seven points separating the two and the top four are covered by 27.

“The onus is on us,” continued Woodroffe. “As it stands, we’re not relying on any other results. But there’s still four big games for us to play and it’s still up for grabs.”

Hellingly triumphed by 23 runs in the reverse fixture on June 11 largely thanks to an unbeaten 144 from Scott Pearce.

Woodroffe added: “They’ve got a strong all-round team, just like we have. We’re going to need to be at our best to get anything out of the game.”

Richard Harrison and Paul Nice are unavailable due to work and family commitments respectively, but Ian Crittenden is hoping to return from holiday in time to take his place. Sidley seconds are at home to their Hellingly counterparts.
