Rye come up short in the chase

Dan Seabrook made a half-century in Rye Cricket Club's defeat away to Crawley on Saturday

Rye went down by 32 runs despite Kshemal Waingankar taking six wickets with the ball and Dan Seabrook scoring a half-century with the bat.

Gary Willis lost the toss and Rye were asked to field. Crawley started steadily only for Willis (2-31) to remove both openers.

Waingankar then opened his account to leave Crawley three down, but a half-century partnership between Kunal Kapoor (53) and Harry Chaudhary (37) stabilised the innings.

Waingankar then removed Kapoor with Jackson Woodcock taking his second sharp catch of the game and Chaudhary was dismissed by Harry Smeed with Will Wheeler taking a superb catch at long-on.

Waingankar continued to take wickets at regular intervals and with Crawley seven down, play was halted by a short rain delay. After the resumption, Waingankar took two more wickets to finish with 6-51 and the final wicket went to Smeed (2-44) with James Hamilton taking a sharp catch at slip.

At the halfway stage Rye felt that 173 was very gettable on a good wicket for batting. Rye’s innings started well with Seabrook and Hamilton putting on 50 for the first wicket.

After Hamilton was dismissed for 24, however, Rye slipped to 96-6, including losing top scorer Seabrook for a well-compiled 52.

Jack Dudley and Mark Cook came together at the fall of the seventh wicket, and compiled a useful partnership until Cook was removed by Kapoor for 35.

Kapoor then claimed the final two wickets to finish with 5-43 and Dudley was stranded on 10 not out as Rye were all out for 140.

Third-placed Rye will look to bounce when league leaders Mayfield visit The Salts this coming Saturday in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. Play is due to start at 1pm.
