Priory not giving up on second

Hastings Priory captain George Campbell believes a runners-up finish is still possible.

But he admits the club’s hopes of retaining the Sussex Cricket League title are over going into the penultimate weekend of the season.

Campbell said: “Second is massively still on considering we’ve got Nomads in the last game of the season. While everyone expects them to beat the academy, you can’t take anything for granted.

Horsham just getting home against the academy and us drawing with Chichester has just pushed them out of sight, but it’s been another very strong season considering we lost two of our biggest threats with the ball (Josh Poysden and Kirk Wernars) for four-six weeks each to injury. We’ve coped with that very, very well and still basically been there or thereabouts.”

Third-placed Priory are 53 points behind Premier League leaders Horsham with 60 still available. They trail second-placed Preston Nomads by 26 points, albeit having played an extra match.

Nomads will play their game in hand against the Sussex Development XI on Sunday after hosting bottom-of-the-table Eastbourne tomorrow (Saturday).

Priory are away to sixth-placed Worthing, who are still not out of the woods as far as relegation is concerned, tomorrow before entertaining Nomads, as Campbell mentioned, next Saturday.

Matt Machan and Kirk Wernars are expected to be with Sussex at the Friends Life T20 finals’ day, Adam Barton and Tom Harvey are unavailable, and Dave Draper and Mick Glazier will play for the seconds as they can’t travel.
