The skipper felt his side fell well short of setting a decent total, before they failed to put any pressure on with the ball as the visitors easily knocked off the total.

Littlehampton – having won the toss and batted – scored 193-9 as several batsmen made starts but failed to kick on.

Openers Tom Lee (28) and Nathan Perry (14) started well before both were victims to Portslade captain Paul Glover, thanks to Tom Nickolson’s safe hands.

Further scores came from Chris Heberlein (22) Jordan Farrell (12), Rive (28) and Amjad Mohsin’s unbeaten 35.

Glover claimed the best figures for the visitors, with a return of 4-42.

In reply, Glover hit 84 and David Wainwright 24, before Hamish Lewis made 60 not out to help Portslade home for the loss of three wickets in the 33rd over.

Rive said: “We lost early wickets at the wrong times but we could have got 200 in the end.

“I think 240/250 would have been a good score, to be honest.

“We had four or five batsmen in the 20s or 30s, but you have got to convert one or two of them into 50s, but we got out at the wrong times.

“We still had three or four wickets to go when Amjad and I were in and we were looking to get 200 then. We should have been looking at 250 with the weather like that, but just 193 and with the way we bowled as well, there was no way to build any pressure.”
