Ex-Priory duo meet in World Cup

But it was Michael Yardy who claimed the bragging rights over Morne van Wyk after England edged out South Africa by six runs in Chennai.

Yardy scored three off 17 balls at number seven, while van Wyk held the catch to dismiss Matt Prior as England totalled 171 after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Van Wyk, also batting at seven, made 13 from 37 deliveries and Yardy, who opened the bowling, took 1-46 off nine overs as South Africa were all out for 165 in reply.

Sussex captain Yardy, a former William Parker Sports College pupil, has played in England’s last three matches and has won 28 One Day International caps in total.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Van Wyk has featured in South Africa’s last two games and has made 10 career ODI appearances.

The duo were part of the Priory side which finished runners-up to Brighton & Hove in the Sussex League in 2000.

Van Wyk, 31, was Priory’s overseas player that summer and 30-year-old Yardy turned out regularly for the club back then before going on to establish himself as a first team regular with Sussex.
