Sussex ace Panesar, who made five Sussex Premier League appearances for Bexhill back in 2010, faced five balls at the death to deny the hosts a series victory at Eden Park in Auckland.

England ended their second innings on 315-9 thanks largely to a magnificent 110 not out from Matt Prior, becoming only the third Test side to bat out the entire final day having been four wickets down overnight.

Although better known as a spin bowler, it’s not the first time Panesar has helped save a game for England with the bat because he also stood firm in the first Ashes Test against Australia at Cardiff in 2009. He took three wickets in the match with the ball.
