Bexhill still in promotion mix

Bexhill return from their free week believing they are still in the promotion shake-up.

Fifth-placed Bexhill are 32 points outside the two promotion spots in Sussex Cricket League Division Two with five matches to go.

First team manager Hamish Russell said: “You’re always in with a chance. The top spot looks like it’s sewn up, but we’re only 32 points off that second place.

“If we win on the weekend and a couple of other results go our way...you’re always going to be there or

thereabouts.”

While some of Bexhill’s players were playing for teams lower down the club and others were on the golf course last weekend, Glynde & Beddingham put themselves in the driving seat for the runners-up berth with a comfortable 89-run victory over St James’s Montefiore.

Third-placed Haywards Heath moved 13 points ahead of Bexhill after drawing with Goring By Sea and Cuckfield nudged two above Chris Topp’s side into fourth despite having to settle for a draw against second-bottom Lewes Priory.

“Six weeks ago we would have been happy with third or fourth, but we’re still looking to go up,” continued Russell. “We’ve got some tough games ahead of us, but I’m quite confident that we can give everyone a run for their money.”

Bexhill will attempt to make it four consecutive victories in completed matches tomorrow (Saturday) when they entertain Ifield in what, on paper at least, is the easiest of their remaining fixtures.

Bexhill should be around full strength, making it very difficult to know who to leave out. Play will get underway from 1pm at The Polegrove.
