Arundel fall to third successive defeat

ARUNDEL Cricket Club lost their third successive match in Sussex League Division 3 West on Saturday when Billingshurst won by four wickets.

Arundel remained in sixth place in the table despite the defeat to a Billingshurst team, who were led to victory by Mike Burroughs’ unbeaten half-century.

After losing the toss and being put into bat, Arundel were bowled out for 149 in 48.1 overs.

Captain Ally James hit six fours and one six as he top-scored with 44 from 71 balls. Geoff Stothert struck 35, with three fours and three sixes, and opening batsman Ryan Chitty hit 32. Joe Bain, with 17, was the only other player to make double figures as Arundel slipped from 109-3 to 149 all out as their last three wickets fell without a run being added.

Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi led the way for Billingshurst with 5-30 off 13.1 overs.

Arundel took early wickets in Billingshurst’s reply and reduced them to 3-2 and then 27-4 as Keelan Shoulders and Geoff Stothert took two wickets each.

Burroughs and Billy Harris shared a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket before Harris was out lbw to Will Clark for 38 after hitting five fours and one six.

Toby Loxley then added 49 for the sixth wicket with Burroughs before he was out for 27 when he became Shoulders’ third victim.

Burroughs remained at the crease, though, and finished unbeaten on 50, from 98 balls, as he guided Billingshurst to victory with Ben Williams, who finished four not out.

Shoulders finished with 3-23 from 12 overs and Stothert claimed 2-33 off 12 overs.

Arundel travel to second-placed Bognor Regis on Saturday.
