CRICKET: Weekly round-up (May 2)

Glynde won the toss and chose to bat, but Littlehampton's strong bowling attack dismissed them for just 100.

Adam Tester grabbed five wickets for 43 runs, and captain Luke Vinter and Chris Hanks took two wickets each.

However, both Littlehamp-ton openers, James Askew and Chris Heberlein, fell for ducks and things did not get much better.

Stuart Hanks top-scored with 29 and Guy Souch hit five fours in his 20 but Littlehampton were bowled out for 88 in 25.2 overs.

Vinter said: "When you restrict a team to 100 runs, you should be winning that game. For the first game of the season, I couldn't have asked for a better bowling and fielding performance.

"Ultimately, it was poor batting that let us down. We needed someone to go in and knuckle down but we tried to play our shots and get the runs far too quickly.

"To have only four players get into double figures isn't good enough.

"We have to put it behind us and move on. We're a good side and, if we put in strong performances, the results will come."

Arundel, who won just once all last year, got their season off to a great start with a 10-run win over Goring in Division 3 West.

Arundel, after being put into bat, made 157-8 from their 53 overs.

Ryan Chitty and captain Richard James led the scoring with 43 and 39 respectively. Goring's Aaron Wyatt led their attack with four wickets for 18 runs.

Sean Twine then excelled with the ball, with five wickets for 38 runs, and Goring were dismissed 11 runs short of victory.

Arundel skipper Richard James said: "I'm delighted to start the season with a win and 30 points.

"We were sensible with the bat and great in the field. Everything that went in the air that was catchable was caught, and a couple were great takes. These were things we've been working on, so we're very satisfied."

East Preston comfortably saw off Southwater with a 64-run victory in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1.

Southwater won the toss and put EP into bat but Colin Smith (63), Dan Williams (35 not out), Tom Reeves (28) and Jack Sunderland (24) helped EP declare on 200-6.

Mark Coskin then dominated with the ball and took seven wickets for 35 runs.

Johann Brouwer blasted 72 for Southwater but they fell to 136 all out in the 36th over.

EP skipper Andy Reeves said: "It was an encouraging result. Everyone added little bits with the bat and everyone contained themselves with the bowling changes we made. We made a little statement declaring at 200 and showed our confidence to say to them come and have a go at us."

EP's Joel Kingsbury celebrated his maiden century in a pre-season friendly last week as he hit 104 in their defeat against Broadwater.

Clymping failed to start their season with a win as they lost by a single wicket against Portslade.

After Clymping were asked to bat first, they were bowled out for just 140.

New captain Karl Pierce top-scored with 66, while James Salisbury added 20 and Sam Orchard hit 18 in what Pierce saw as a disappointing day with the bat.

After Clymping had bowled out Portslade openers Sam Jones (43) and Andrew Reid (26), they ploughed through Portslade's middle order but a 13-run last-wicket partnership took Portslade to victory.

Pierce said: "We didn't bat very well at all and should have set a higher target, although at one point we were 23-4 so we pulled it back a little.

"We then pinned them back at 111-8, and then spilled a catch and just couldn't get that last wicket."

Rustington's first game of the season ended in a draw against Bury & West Burton.

Rustington won the toss and decided to bowl and things looked to be going well when Simon Gosden caught and bowled opener Tony Lewis on nought.

But William Rowsell's unbeaten century helped guide Bury to 249-3. Gosden finished with three wickets for 74 runs.

Rustington then finished their reply on 155-6. Richard Hobbs hit 36, Alan Hodgson 30 and new skipper Martyn Payne 28.

Payne said: "We were happy to get a draw after a team had stacked up such a high score. We have a fairly young side and are building on what we've got after a difficult year last season."
