Cricket match in memory of James

Current and past players from Newhaven and Denton cricket clubs, and friends of the clubs, will contest the James Daniels Memorial Trophy at Denton Cricket Club on Sunday (10.30am start).

Sport-loving James, 19, of Rookery Way, Denton, was one of three friends killed in a crash on the A27 at East Hampnett in November last year.

Afterwards a quiz night will be held in the clubhouse and an all-day barbecue and raffle are also planned.

Money raised will boost the James Daniels Memorial Fund, which parents Paul and Sarah set up to help young sportsmen and women in the area.

More than 4,000 has already been raised through donations and events including a golf tournament, quiz night and football match. Martin Smith, captain of Peacehaven Golf Club, nominated the fund as his 2006 charity.

The fund has paid for improvements to the clubhouse and new nets at Newhaven Cricket Club, but Paul and Sarah are keen to hear from any other clubs, groups or individuals who would like to benefit.

James attended Railway Road Nursery in Newhaven, Denton County Primary School and Tideway School, Newhaven, before starting a BA honours degree in PE and Teaching at University College, Chichester.

He was a goalkeeper and outfield player for Denton and South Heighton from the age of 10 to 16, then a goalkeeper for Peacehaven under-18s.
