Cornish: Title in our hands

South Saxons skipper Paddy Cornish is pleased that the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One title is in his team’s own hands.

Last weekend’s 4-1 win over Lewes III meant Cornish’s side continued its 100 per cent home record, and Saxons host leaders Brighton & Hove III at the start of next month.

“It’s up to us now,” Cornish said. “If we win all of our remaining matches, we’re champions. That starts tomorrow (Saturday) against Horsham III. If results go our way, we might even be top by Saturday night.”

A Brighton loss to fourth-placed Mid-Sussex II coupled with a Saxons win would see them switch places. Bottom-of-the-table Horsham, incidentally, lost 9-1 to Brighton last weekend.

“Even a draw for Brighton would be a good result for us,” added Cornish. “We fear nobody when we’re playing at home. There’s a long way to go still, but it’s getting interesting now.”

Standings (played 14 matches unless stated): 1 Brighton & Hove III 31pts, 2 SOUTH SAXONS 29, 3 Eastbourne II 28, 4 Mid-Sussex II (13) 25, 5 Crowborough 23, 6 Worthing II (13) 20, 7 Penguin 18, 8 Crawley II (13) 18, 9 Lewes III 16, 10 Hailsham (13) 13, 11 Middleton & Bognor 12, 12 Horsham III 4.
