Clymping FC no longer in pole position

AFTER being favourites to lift the West Sussex League title last week, Clymping have since lost two games, and are now relying on results going their way to finish in the top two.

They lost 2-1 to new leaders Newtown on Tuesday, so have slipped to second. If they can finish runners-up to Newtown, they will still be eligible for promotion into the County League because Newtown cannnot go up.

Clymping fell 2-0 behind early in the second half, before Joe Shelley pulled a goal back on 75 minutes. But he then missed a great equalising chance five minutes later.

Clymping manager Dominic Di Paola said: "We now need a number of results to go our way to still be promoted.

"We had put ourselves under so much pressure after such a bad start to the season, but we got ourselves back in it - and in the driving seat - but have now had another bad run.

"We probably lost the title on Saturday. If we'd won then, we'd have only needed three points from two games.

"Now we need Newtown to win the league, and for us to finish runners-up to go into the County League."

On Saturday, Clymping had lost 1-0 at home to University of Chichester to an 82nd-minute goal.

Seb Di Paola and Tony Castro had both gone close to giving Clymping the lead.

Clymping head into Bank Holiday Monday with both their first and reserve teams in cup finals at Arundel.

The first side meet Newtown Villa in the Malcolm Simmonds final with a 3pm start.

Earlier, the Reserves will meet Ashington in the Chichester Char-ity final with a 10.30am kick-off.
