Chichester well beaten in battle at Hastings

Hastings elected to bat and found scoring difficult against a good opening spell from Matt Geffen (2-24) and Daniel Joseph and perhaps Chichester didn’t get the reward they deserved.

One of the main reasons for this was the batting of Kirk Werners. He carried his bat for 109 and although wickets fell around him later on, he was able to push the score on.

John Morgan chipped in with 39, but when he was lost Hastings slipped from 150 for four to 195 all out.

This was down to the bowling of Justin Scott (2-17) and Adam Zampa (4-78). Zampa managed a hat-trick, but he was unable to remove Werners.

A score of 195 could have been a little below par, but Chichester produced a dismal batting display against the Hastings attack.

Hastings maximised the use of Werners - he opened the bowling and claimed three wickets to add to his century. However, the real damage was done by John Morgan with figures of seven for 38.

The pair bowled well but a number of the Chichester batsmen contributed to their own demise as the team tumbled to 59 all out. Mark Bamford top-scored for Chichester with just 14.

Things improved for Chichester on Sunday as they brushed aside Billingshurst in the Sussex 20/20 Cup with a score of 167 for nine against their opponents’ 86 for nine - but league form is all that matters to Chichester and they must get back on track as they entertain Bexhill this Saturday.
